Old Fashioned Chocolate Buttermilk Cake

This Old Fashioned Chocolate Buttermilk cake is the absolute best cake recipe! This a my standard “Go To” chocolate cake recipe and it soon will be yours too.

Ingredients and Variations

Ingredients: all purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, oil, buttermilk, whole eggs, baking soda, vanilla extract, salt and strong brewed coffee.

Variations: gluten free flour cna be used in place of AP, whole milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar can replace buttermilk, water can be used in place of coffee if desired. Nuts can be added if desired.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups 3 all purpose flour

  • 2 1/2 cups 2 1/2 granulated sugar

  • 1 tbsp 1 baking soda + 1 tsp

  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 salt

  • 1 cup 1 unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 1/3 cup 1 1/3 oil (canola or vegetable)

  • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 buttermilk

  • 3 3 large eggs

  • 1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 strong brewed coffee

  • 1 tsp 1 vanilla extract

Directions

  • Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 9×13 or 2 round 9-inch cake pans or spray them.
  • Sift all dry ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.
  • Whisk together wet ingredients except coffee.
  • alternate adding dry ingredients and coffee to wet ingredients. Do NOT over mix, whisk until just combined.
  • Pour bater into prepared cake pans, cupcake liners or ice cream cones and bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes until cake is done. It is done when you poke it with a toothpick and the pick comes out clean.
  • cool completely on a cooling rack before frosting.
