Challah Bread

This Challah bread is rich and delicious! Great for everyday and any holiday!

Ingredients and Variations

Ingredients: Bread flour, eggs, vegetable oil, sugar yeast, water and salt.

Variations: All purpose flour can be used in place of bread flour, use the oil of your preference, even olive oil works great in this, honey can be used instead of sugar or a sugar alternative of your choice.

Variations: Raisins, golden raisins or dried cranberries can be rehydrated and added, fresh grated nutmeg can also be added if desired ( great for Christmas).

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup 3/4 warm water

  • 2 1/4 tsp 2 1/4 Instant yeast

  • 4 tbsp 4 sugar divided

  • 2 2 whole eggs

  • 1 1 egg yolk ( save the white for brushing the loaf)

  • 3 1/2 – 4 cups 3 1/2 – 4 bread flour

  • 1 tsp 1 salt

  • 2 tbsp 2 oil

Directions

  • Mix water, yeast, 2 tbsp sugar and 1 cup of flour to make a sponge, let rest in bowl on counter for 20 minutes covered.
  • Add eggs, flour and salt to dough, mix until it comes together, then add oil
  • Knead for 7 minutes either by hand or using a dough hook attachment in mixer.
  • Put into an oiled bowl, cover and set in warm place for 2 hours until it doubles in size.
  • Rehydrate raisins if adding them and flatten dough out slightly, add drained fruit on top, close dough into a ball and knead in slightly.
  • Divide dough into 2 if doing a twist or divide dough into 3 or 6 if braiding.
  • Shape your dough and put onto a silicone or parchment lined sheet pan, cover and let rise 30-60 minutes.
  • Brush loaf with egg white and bake at 375° for 28 – 30 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool loaf on wire rack completely before cutting.

Notes

  • This bread makes the BEST French toast!!
