Traditional Gingerbread Cookies

These gingerbread cookies have been a family tradition for many years and will be for your family too! The perfect blend of Molasses and spice!

Ingredients and Variations

Ingredients: All purpose flour, butter, egg, unsulfered molasses, ground cinnamon, ground clove, ground ginger, sugar, baking soda and salt.

Variations: A sugar substitute can be used, such as Splenda or Swerve. Gluten free flour can also be switched out from all purpose.

Decoration Raisins, cinnamon candies, sprinkle, non perils, gum drops, royal icing.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup 1 butter, softened slightly

  • 1 cup 1 granulated sugar

  • 1 1 large egg

  • 1 cup 1 molasses

  • 5 cups 5 all purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 tsp 1 1/2 baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp 1/2 salt

  • 2 tsp 2 ground ginger

  • 1 tsp 1 ground cinnamon

  • 1 tsp 1 ground clove

Directions

  • In a large bowl, sift together dry ingredients. Set aside.
  • Using a mixer, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, add molasses and egg. Slowly stir in dry ingredients until dough forms. Wrap in plastic forming a dough disc and refrigerate 2 hours.
  • Heat oven to 375°
  • On a floured surface, roll dough out 1/4 inch thick and cut out desired cookie shapes.
  • Decorate with raisins, cinnamon candies or sprinkles before baking if desired.
  • Bake at 375° for 5 to 6 minutes on the middle rack, until golden brown around edges.
  • Cool completely on wire rack before icing.
